SourceSmelt Bay Provincial Park holds the southern peninsula of remote Cortes Island, and it is the island's only provincial campground: 24 spacious sites in the woods above the bay, a mix of reservable and first come, first served.
The beach runs from Smelt Bay around to Sutil Point and is superb for low-tide exploring. The park takes its name from the capelin that spawn ashore by the tens of thousands in late September and early October, and the mounds behind the beach are believed to be Coast Salish defensive works.
Mansons Landing is about 4 km away; the nearest listed fuel is about 11 km at Squirrel Cove, so plan the ferry-hop supply run deliberately.
