SourceFrench Beach Provincial Park fronts the Strait of Juan de Fuca on southern Vancouver Island, where 1,600 metres of sand and pebble beach run below a wide grass flat and forest trails. The Olympic Mountains sit across the water, and the strait is good whale ground: gray whales pass on their spring migration north and again in fall, with resident killer whales, seals, sea lions and otters offshore.
The park lists 55 campsites on paved access, some reservable and some first come, first served. Fire pits, pit toilets and potable water are provided, and hiking, biking, fishing and swimming are all at hand.
Shirley is about 3.6 km down the road, but the nearest fuel, a Petro-Canada, is roughly 17 km away, so do not count on filling up close by. The Sandcut Falls trailhead is about 5.4 km and Bass Lake about 10 km.
